GET IN TO A
STATE OF MIND
Michael Flynn was appointed by Trump and confirmed by Congress to be National Security Advisor. His short stay with the agency is underlined by the fact he lied to Congress under oath. Now, less than a month later Flynn is back in the hot seat of Congressional hearings, this time with immunity.
"Immunity from what;" this is the question on everyone’s mind and no one’s lips.
Flynn has been part of the intelligence community for decades. He worked under both Republican and Democratic presidents. Under Obama, Flynn was the boy who cried wolf. At least that is what everyone thought. Flynn was right about ISIS being a threat to not only U.S. security; but global security. He didn’t see ISIS as staying JV (junior varsity) for long, and he felt we needed to build a team as well as weapons to combat them.
Flynn is correct on a couple of things. The first is the idea he stated, "ISIS is hard for Americans to understand because they are a military organization which is religious. He goes on to believe that ISIS has zealot tenets and the mindset to carry out those beliefs. Second, Flynn pointed that ISIS would not be happy with a small corner of the Middle East. He believed ISIS’s religious tenets told them to spread the word of their god. Anyone who wouldn’t accept their version of Islam was the enemy. It was because of the beliefs mentioned above that Flynn was forced into early retirement under Obama’s administration.
In the end, I believe this single act is what lead him to Trump’s door. Flynn found in Trump, a person with dystopian ideals matching his own, in many respects. Where those ideas didn’t match, Flynn thought he could manage them or ignore, perhaps sweep under the rug, where being reconciled was never open to discussion at all. So here we are.
Flynn has never approved of Russia or Putin, generally seeing them as an enemy to the United States. Will Flynn, being a Retired General, head of the National Security Agency, put loyalty to the United Stated before loyalty to Trump? More than likely, he will. And this, not only to save his rear end and pension. Why else? Firstly, because this was one area he didn’t agree with Trump. Secondly, Flynn still carries a truck full of anger of his perceived betrayal by the Obama administration. Another President betraying him, yet again, should it come to it, might be the last straw on the proverbial camel’s back.
It remains to be seen or heard, should it be brought into public light, what Flynn did for Trump. And, on no small note, why those actions would require immunity.
